If I Have An ACN, Do I Still Need An ABN For My Company?

There are many questions that must be asked when creating a new company, and it is not hard to understand why; there are many intriciate processes in starting up a new business or company. One of the biggest questions on company owners minds is whether or not you need to have an ACN as well as an ABN. An ABN is very different to an ACN and has different implications; for example, an ABN is required for a business not a company and is separate to ASIC. In fact, most people aren’t actually aware that an ABN is provided by the Australian Business Register not by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) like an ACN is. This article seeks to outline the differences between an ACN and an ABN, and the circumstances in which an ABN would be required. It also discusses the significance of displaying either your ACN or ABN for legal reasons, and how they may affect you and your company. Read more here

It really depends on what your business is, there is a lot of variables and it is worthwhile speaking an accountant or solicitor in regards to your specific situation. In general though you can run a business (with a business name) just with an ABN and do not need a ACN where as if you register as a company (that trades & claims GST) you will need an ABN to trade under that name. There is also variables on this such as if you or your business does not earn over $75k you will not require an ABN number.

Again the best thing to do would be get advice of your accountant or solicitor to ensure you protected and set up correctly for your situation.

when I applied to register my business, did that entitle me to an abn?
In summary,
I applied and paid for a business name
Do I have to apply for an ABN as well?

Hi Julie,

When you register your business name you still have to apply for the ABN. You can do apply online by searching google with apply for an abn.

Hi abdu,
It really comes down to what your big picture is. If you believe that you will build a big business out of your venture then I would suggest a company but if it is just a hobby well you could just run with a business name.
It is always good to begin with the end in mind, so know what you are working for and that way you do not have to make to many unessary changes along the way.
Also I suggest getting advice from your accountant as he will understand your particular situation.
